Let me introduce you to Göbekli Tepe, one of the greatest enigmas of the Neolithic era.
Located atop a hill in the Taurus Mountains, southeast Turkey, Göbekli Tepe (meaning "Hill with a Navel" in Turkish) is about 15 km from Şanlıurfa. This archaeological site, dating back to around 9600 BCE, was built by hunter-gatherers long before the era of sedentism, and has become a cornerstone in understanding the Neolithic and the origins of human civilization.
The discovery of the site dates back to the 1960s, but its true significance was only recognized later by Klaus Schmidt, an archaeologist at the German Archaeological Institute. Initially, the site was seen as just a mound of stones and rubble, and its importance was ignored until 1994, when Schmidt revisited the area and realized those carved stones formed part of a monumental structure. From 1995 onward, Schmidt began systematic excavations, revealing the impressive stone structures of Göbekli Tepe.
The site is about 15 meters high and 300 meters in diameter, consisting of several circular structures made of limestone, known as "stone circles." Each circle is formed by huge stone pillars, some up to 5 meters tall and weighing several tons. These pillars are adorned with detailed reliefs depicting animals like lions, bulls, foxes, gazelles, vultures, waterfowl, as well as stylized human figures, pictograms, and mysterious symbols.
Carbon dating of the stone structures revealed they date back to approximately 9600 BCE, making Göbekli Tepe one of the oldest sites in the world. But what makes this dating so surprising? The fact that the site predates the first known cities in Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt!
This means it was constructed during the Early Neolithic period, when humans were still transitioning from hunting and gathering to agriculture, challenging traditional views of the evolution of civilizations.
Furthermore, the stone structures found at Göbekli Tepe are remarkably advanced for their time, challenging the idea that prehistoric architecture and society were primitive. The exact purpose of the site remains a mystery, but many archaeologists believe that Göbekli Tepe functioned as a place of worship or ceremony, suggesting that religious and cultural activities took place much earlier than previously thought.
One of the most intriguing discoveries at Göbekli Tepe is its relation to agriculture. Before this discovery, it was believed that agriculture preceded the construction of complex monuments. However, Göbekli Tepe seems to reverse this chronology, suggesting that ceremonial and religious activities may have occurred long before the rise of agriculture.
The greatest mystery, however, came later. Around 8000 BCE, the structures at Göbekli Tepe were deliberately buried with earth and rubble. The reason for this burial is still unclear, but several theories attempt to explain this action. One hypothesis suggests that the burial was part of a ritual to close or deactivate the site, while another believes it could be related to cultural or social changes in the region.
Curiously, some of the reliefs carved on the stone columns were intentionally damaged before being buried. This deliberate destruction of the figures and symbols remains unexplained, raising even more questions: why did these ancient builders damage the representations while preserving the structure through burial? These questions continue to challenge archaeologists and add layers of mystery to the site.
Göbekli Tepe has the power to transform our understanding of human history and early civilizations. Its impressive structures, surprising age, and cultural implications challenge traditional theories on the development of human society and the emergence of religious and ceremonial activities.
As excavations continue, more information about the site is being uncovered, and studying Göbekli Tepe may provide valuable insights into the evolution of the first complex societies.
