Have you heard about the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917? An event that sparked questions from the start and carries a deeper mystery beyond its spiritual aspect.

Over the years, different theories have emerged, and one of them is truly intriguing: could one of the children who witnessed the phenomena in Fatima have been replaced by someone else? That's right, and today we’ll explore this theory and other mysterious aspects surrounding the Fatima apparitions and the life of Sister Lucia.

The Theory of Sister Lucia's Replacement

A widely discussed speculative theory suggests that after the apparitions of Our Lady in 1917, Sister Lucia, one of the three visionaries, may have been replaced by another woman. The theory claims that this substitution occurred around 1957, when a new “Sister Lucia” began to appear publicly. Various researchers and writers have delved into this hypothesis, pointing out a series of discrepancies regarding Lucia's appearance, behavior, and statements over the years.

Physical changes, such as the extraction of all her teeth and her forced isolation in a convent, are frequently cited as possible indicators that something unusual was taking place.

The Official Account of the Fatima Secrets

Before diving deeper into this theory, let’s briefly review the famous “Fatima Secret.” During the apparitions in 1917, the Virgin Mary revealed three secrets to the child visionaries – Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta – which later became known worldwide.

  1. First secret: A vision of hell, with demons and tormented souls, serving as a warning about the importance of penance and conversion to avoid such a fate.
  2. Second secret: The Virgin spoke about Russia, mentioning that if the nation was not consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, it would spread its errors worldwide, promoting wars, persecution of the Church, and martyrdom. However, if Russia converted, there would be peace.
  3. Third secret: Stay firm, because this part was kept for a long time and was only revealed in 2000. It described a vision where the Pope, along with other religious leaders, is assassinated. Many believe this vision referred to the 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II, but other theories suggest the third secret has not been fully revealed yet.

Third Secret of Fatima

Sister Lucia’s Trajectory and the Contradictions

Lucia de Jesus Rosa dos Santos, born in 1907, was the protagonist of the Fatima apparitions. At just 10 years old, Lucia and her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta, witnessed the visions of Our Lady between May and October 1917. In July of that year, Mary revealed the three secrets, including the vision of hell.

After Francisco and Jacinta's deaths, Lucia continued her religious life. In 1921, she entered a boarding school in Porto, and years later, joined the Institute of the Sisters of Saint Dorothy in Spain. However, her religious life was marked by increasing isolation. In 1943, after much pressure from the Bishop of Leiria, Lucia finally wrote down the third secret but sealed it in an envelope to be opened only in 1960.

The mystery surrounding this secret deepened, as in 1957, when the Bishop of Leiria sent it to the Patriarch of Lisbon, it was found in a different envelope, with three seals, not one as Lucia had originally reported. This discrepancy fueled theories that the envelope may have been opened before being resealed.

Encounter with the Church and Behavioral Changes

In the following years, Lucia’s life became even more reclusive. In 1948, she was transferred to the Carmelite convent in Coimbra, where she remained practically invisible to the public. She suffered from a dental issue, which led to the extraction of all her teeth. This episode raised suspicions, especially due to the speed with which it occurred and the lack of clear explanations.

Between 1957 and 1967, when Lucia reappeared publicly, many noticed significant changes in her appearance, behavior, and even her personality. It was during this period that speculations began suggesting that Lucia could have been replaced by someone else.

The Suspected Replacement in 1967

In 1967, Lucia appeared with a visibly different appearance, sparking a series of speculations. For many, this change marked the beginning of the idea that an imposter might have taken her place. And when, in 1992, this "new" Lucia claimed that Russia had already converted – a different interpretation from what had been previously stated – it further fueled distrust.

Physical and Behavioral Differences

The comparisons between the original Lucia and the supposed imposter didn’t stop there. Many scholars pointed out physical and behavioral differences between the two. The eyebrows, facial structure, lips, posture, and even manual habits – such as the fact that the original Sister Lucia was left-handed, while the imposter was not – are some of the points raised.

Additionally, the "substitute Lucia" exhibited a much more extroverted and cheerful demeanor, whereas the real Sister Lucia was known for her shyness and discretion. This raised many doubts about the authenticity of this public figure.

Reasons for the Substitution?

Some theories suggest that the replacement of Lucia occurred due to security concerns, especially after an incident in 1967, when she refused to meet with Pope Paul VI. Others believe that the Church may have manipulated Lucia’s figure to better control the narrative surrounding the Fatima secrets, particularly regarding the interpretation of the third secret.

There are also speculations that the Fatima secrets, like the entire narrative, may not have been as genuine as believed, and that the Church might have been trying to hide something deeper.

The Mystery Continues

Despite all these theories and investigations, the truth about what really happened in Fatima and whether Lucia was replaced remains a great mystery. The story continues to intrigue and leave many unanswered questions.
