The Spiritual Journey: Three Principles Featured

Today, many people seeking the spiritual path face a modern challenge: the expectation that results in life come effortlessly, almost like "spiritual fast food."

This phenomenon reflects a misguided belief that life should provide everything without requiring work and dedication.

In reality, nothing in our life happens without some form of effort. We can easily observe this when reflecting on the journeys of great musicians, doctors, or even parents who deeply dedicate themselves to their responsibilities. To become a virtuoso musician, for example, years of practice and discipline are necessary. To be a respected doctor, much study and commitment are required. The same applies to any significant goal: without effort, nothing is built.

In the spiritual path, this principle is even more evident. We are dealing with something profound and immaterial, something that touches the eternal within each of us. Often, people desire the fruits of this path without understanding the sacrifice required. It would be like wanting to be a great surgeon without ever studying medicine or being an outstanding violinist without regular practice. However, true spiritual awakening demands genuine commitment, something beyond the easy and illusory promises that circulate out there.

The Three Fundamental Principles on the Spiritual Path

Although there are various resources, such as videos and teachings, that aim to guide practitioners, many people give up their inner search because they fail to understand three essential principles. Without them, it is impossible to advance in spiritual studies, and these principles are exactly those highlighted in the six Buddhist Paramitas, which we can understand as "that which transcends" or "the skillful means to achieve liberation."

1. Moral Conduct: The Foundation for Awakening

The first fundamental principle on the spiritual path is moral conduct. No practitioner will be able to awaken any power or facilitate spiritual development without maintaining ethical and upright conduct. The promises of inner transformation that we see around us are often illusory and do not lead to concrete results. To achieve true enlightenment, it is necessary to purify oneself in body, speech, and mind, living in an integral and just manner in the practical world.

Many people fall into the trap of being deceived by superficial messages, which may even sound beautiful but are neither deep nor true. The real spiritual path requires more than just beautiful words; it requires concrete action and transformation in the real world. Until you deeply examine your own psychology and eliminate inner distortions, you will not achieve true freedom. Right conduct is like a bucket without holes, capable of holding the light you gain without letting it slip away.

2. Diligence: The Effort Necessary for Mastery

The second principle is diligence, or constant effort. The famous phrase "Practice makes perfect" has never been more true. The spiritual journey requires years of dedication, meditation, study, and self-improvement. However, we live in an era where instant gratification is prevalent, and many people desire quick results without understanding that true progress requires patience and continuous effort.

The spiritual path is open to all, but it is important to understand that the attainment of higher levels of consciousness will not come without true inner change. You cannot continue living an ordinary life and expect to achieve a high state of wisdom or enlightenment. As Master Jesus said: "New wine in new wineskins." If we want different results, we must change our old habits and start acting more consciously.

A classic example of this comes from the story of Milarepa, one of the greatest saints of the East, and his disciple Gampopa. Milarepa, dedicated to meditating in the mountains, was frequently visited by Gampopa. Before leaving to spread the Dharma, Gampopa asked for a final teaching. Milarepa, however, did not give him words or theories, but showed him his calloused buttocks from intense meditation. This gesture was the final lesson: true enlightenment does not come from theory or debate, but from constant and disciplined practice. Years of meditation and mental discipline are what lead to true spiritual realization.

3. Patience: Time as an Ally on the Spiritual Path

Finally, the third essential principle is patience. Jesus also teaches us about the importance of this virtue: "In patience you will possess your souls." Patience is crucial because it allows us to face the challenges and difficulties of the spiritual path without giving in to despair or frustration. In inner development, personal limitations need to be recognized and overcome over time, and patience helps us in this process.

True patience is the ability to deal with adversity without falling into impulsive reactions. It allows us to cultivate a more resilient and flexible mind in the face of life's difficulties. In the spiritual context, patience helps us understand that inner growth is not something immediate but a construction that occurs gradually, with continuous effort and the overcoming of our own limitations.

Final Reflection

Therefore, my friend, reflect carefully on these principles. The true spiritual journey requires more than just a superficial search for quick and easy answers. It requires ethical conduct, continuous effort, and deep patience. The path to enlightenment is challenging, but if you follow these principles with dedication, you will be able to overcome difficulties and achieve the spiritual realization you seek.
