The Interconnection Between Impermanence and the Preciousness of Human Life
The Buddhist concept of impermanence and the idea of the preciousness of human life are deeply interconnected, forming a holistic perspective on existence. In Buddhism, human life is considered precious and unique due to the opportunity it provides for spiritual practice and the development of wisdom. Having a human form is seen as a rare and valuable opportunity to progress on the path to enlightenment, as it allows for the cultivation of awareness, discernment, and compassion.
Understanding impermanence highlights the transient nature of all things, including human life itself. The awareness of life’s ephemerality makes it even more precious. If everything is impermanent, each moment of life takes on significant value, and the opportunity to have a human existence becomes even more unique and special.
The Rare Opportunity of Human Life
One of the most important thoughts to be aware of is the understanding of the preciousness of human life. Human life is extremely valuable, rare, and significant in various aspects for our spiritual awakening and for developing a fulfilling life filled with true happiness and joy. It is in physical and human form that our soul can express itself and, through our existential psychological gymnasium, break free from the chains that have imprisoned it for countless cycles of time.
By being born into this world, we are granted a new possibility for redemption. Some are born under highly favorable conditions, while others are not. Some are born with the necessary freedoms for spiritual progress, while others, unfortunately, are not. Many of these privileges may be related to the karma of positive actions from previous lives, and we should use this advantage as a driving force for our inner development.
However, this karma would be fruitless if we use our human life solely for fleeting and temporary personal gratifications. If we understand how precious human birth is, especially if it is filled with privileges—such as a healthy body, financial resources, good education, and being born in a place with freedom of choice—we will strive to use every moment to fully realize the latent potential within us.
The Risk of Wasting Time on the Spiritual Path
Many sincere seekers, failing to grasp this understanding, do not dedicate themselves as they could to crystallizing the superior human being within them. They end up wasting precious time in life with choices that do not contribute to their inner awakening. They go through human life without making progress and still leave dormant seeds of future suffering in their minds.
In the East, it is said that human life is so precious that even the Gods envy it. There is no certainty that, after death, we will have another opportunity or be born under conditions favorable to spiritual practice as we may have today.
Reflect for a brief moment: How many things have happened in your life for you to arrive at this moment? For you to be able to listen to this video and comprehend what is being proposed here?
How many events have occurred in the world for this teaching to reach you, probably through a phone or computer?
Could this be the moment to seize the mast of a drifting ship and take command, directing it where it truly needs to go?
It doesn’t matter how old you are, whether you are rich or poor, man or woman. What matters is how conscious you are of how precious your life is and how favorable it is for the understanding and practice of Dharma.
The Best Moment for Spiritual Dedication is Now
Can you be sure that the coming years will be more favorable for spiritual practice?
The best moment is now. There is no “later.” The future is uncertain, and we cannot guarantee that we will have the same conditions we have now to dedicate ourselves to the spiritual path and to generate future merits.
We have already reflected on the impermanence of human life. Our existence can be cut short at any moment, and our favorable conditions can change suddenly. A healthy body can turn into a sick body. Sharp vision can become tired eyesight. The muscles of youth can give way to a weak and frail body. Such is life! We have already understood this, and within it lies a wonderful teaching.
A common regret expressed by people who have accompanied loved ones in their final moments is that they wish they could go back in time and do many things differently: work less, dedicate themselves to something they loved, spend more time with those they cherished, smile more—among other things that we hardly value today.
Dear seeker, you now have the opportunity to make a difference in your life and in the lives of those around you if you understand how precious and meaningful your life is. And when death comes for you, you will be able to face it with great serenity, without any regrets.
