Our current Masters are among the representatives of this grand tradition. Below, we share a personal account by Mr. Charles Leadbeater of his encounters with these remarkable Sages.
First Encounter: The Adept Jupiter
Leadbeater recounts two occasions when he met a Master in person while both were in their physical bodies. The first of these encounters was with the Adept Jupiter, mentioned in the book "The Lives of Alcyone." This Master played a key role in the creation of parts of Madame Blavatsky's work Isis Unveiled during its writing in Philadelphia and New York.
When Leadbeater was in Adyar, Jupiter kindly requested his revered teacher, Swami T. Subba Row, to take him to meet him. In response to this request, they traveled to the Master's home, where they were warmly received. After a deep and enriching conversation, Leadbeater and his mentor were honored with the opportunity to dine with the Master, even though the Master was a Brahmin. They spent the night and part of the following day under the Adept's roof, in an environment that, for Leadbeater, left no room for illusion about the experience.
The Encounter with the Master Count of Saint-Germain
The second Adept with whom Leadbeater had the privilege of meeting was the Master Count of Saint-Germain, also known as Prince Rakoczy. The encounter took place under extraordinary circumstances, without any prior arrangement. Leadbeater met him by chance while walking down the Corso in Rome. The Master was dressed as a typical Roman gentleman and led him to the gardens of the Pincio hill.
For more than an hour, they conversed about the Society and its work. Leadbeater, who mostly listened, had the privilege of hearing the Master share his wisdom. When the Master asked questions, he responded, but most of the conversation was led by Saint-Germain. This meeting left a significant mark on Leadbeater’s spiritual experience.
Other Encounters with the Brotherhood
Leadbeater also had other encounters with members of the Great Brotherhood under various circumstances. One of the first of these took place in a hotel in Cairo, as he was on his way to India with Madame Blavatsky and other companions. During one of their daily meetings, while sitting on the floor organizing newspaper clippings for Blavatsky, a mysterious man suddenly appeared between him and Madame Blavatsky. Surprised and frightened, Leadbeater stood up, but Blavatsky responded humorously, saying, "If you don't know enough not to be scared by such trivialities, you won’t get far in this occult work."
This mysterious man was, in fact, an Arhat, one rank below the Adept state. Later, he would become the Master Djwal Kul, with whom Leadbeater would have a deep relationship. Several months later, Master Morya appeared physically to communicate with Blavatsky, marking Leadbeater’s first clear and distinct encounter with a Master. At that time, he had not fully developed his higher senses, so this experience was a revelation to him.
Another significant moment was when Leadbeater saw Master Kuthumi on the roof of the Adyar headquarters, walking on a balustrade as if he had materialized from the air. Master Djwal Kul was also seen by him in a similar way, leading Leadbeater to conclude that these Masters, who had materialized for him in the early years of the Society, were the same Beings he continued to encounter over time, in their homes and other locations.
The Expanded Vision and the Higher Dimensions of Reality
Leadbeater mentions that many questioned the reality of his experiences, suggesting that he and others who had similar encounters might have just been dreaming. However, he refutes this idea, asserting that his experiences, which lasted more than forty years, are not ordinary dreams. Moreover, these visits occurred simultaneously for several people, further reinforcing the authenticity of the encounters.
As his expanded vision developed and his latent senses awakened, Leadbeater began to perceive that there are other orders of beings beyond humans. He referred to some of these beings as Devas or Angels, entities that exist on a much higher plane than ours. These entities are part of the great spiritual network alongside the Adepts, contributing to the continuous work and evolution of the Brotherhood.
Conclusion
Charles Leadbeater's accounts offer a unique and fascinating glimpse into the experiences with the Masters of the Great White Brotherhood.
